The Portfolio portion of Newpoint's program involves project-based learning that revolves around students declared Major Area of Interest (MAI). At Newpoint, Information Technology, Computer Arts (video, websites and photography production), Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Health Services are offered as MAIs. Students explore job opportunities and education requirements necessary for professional employment in their chosen fields. In addition, they complete real-world, problem-solving scenarios that require the critical thinking skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The use of corporate technology is an inherent portion of the planning, research, problem-solving, and presentation of every Portfolio project. Major Areas of Interest (MAI) are part of the coursework required for all incoming ninth grade students. Selecting an MAI is an opportunity for students to participate in electives that provide a meaningful connection between high school and the world of work. At Newpoint, students MAI coursework will be matched with Professional Internship Program experience in which they apply knowledge learned in class, as well as observe and experience the profession firsthand through a job sharing experience. Students will earn four elective credits, one per year, toward their chosen MAI through courses taken at NewPoint. They receive an additional four elective credits, one per year, for their Professional Internship Program experience completed in their MAI through our job sharing Internship Program. The coursework and Internship experience provide students an in depth understanding of the MAI and serve as a guide for students in future educational and vocational choices. Like all aspects of a Newpoint education, the use of corporate technology is also integrated into each MAI. Newpoint offers the following Major Areas of Interest; - Digital Arts >> more - Entrepreneurship >> more - Health Occupations >> more - Information Technology >> more - Marketing >> more Newpoint students have the opportunity to revise their MAI selection on an annual basis. The combination of rigorous academics, employability studies, Professional Internship Program, and the Portfolio portion of the program is designed to promote patterns of thought and behavior that produce powerful results for Newpoint students as they complete their high school education, enroll in and complete post-secondary education, and move into the world of work. These habits are the ultimate goal for NewPoint students and are promoted through the academic, job readiness, Professional Internship Program, and Portfolio portions of the program.
